Dorset Architects

Footprint Architects is an award-winning, RIBA Chartered architectural practice based in Dorset. We provide sustainable architectural services for homes, schools, community buildings, heritage projects, workplaces and low-carbon retrofit across Dorset and the South.

Our approach combines thoughtful design, technical knowledge and environmental responsibility. We work with clients from the earliest feasibility and briefing stages through planning, technical design, construction and completion, tailoring our service to the needs and complexity of each project.

Award-Winning Dorset Architects

Our team has extensive experience delivering projects throughout Dorset, from contemporary homes and sensitive extensions to schools, community facilities, historic buildings and major town-centre retrofit. Working locally gives us an understanding of Dorset’s varied architectural and landscape context. The county includes coastal towns, established residential neighbourhoods, rural settlements, conservation areas and nationally protected landscapes, each presenting different opportunities and constraints. We begin by understanding the site, existing buildings, planning context, environmental conditions and the client’s long-term objectives. This enables us to develop designs that respond carefully to their surroundings while remaining practical, sustainable and distinctive.

Located on Branksome Chine beachfront, we designed a certified Passivhaus building incorporating reclaimed timber, low-impact materials, photovoltaic panels and a living roof.

The former department store was carefully retrofitted and transformed into a mixed-use destination while retaining the character of the existing building.

A wooden terrace community space with stools overlooks a sandy beach and ocean, illuminated by soft sunlight through a glass barrier and timber louvres
A spacious, modern pavilion room with arched wooden beams, large windows, light wood floors, and minimal decor, including stools, houseplants, and cricket kit. Sunlight streams through the windows.
A modern meeting room with a large wooden table surrounded by colourful chairs. A projector screen displays colourful icons. The workplace features potted plants, a poster on the wall, hanging lamps, and a view into an adjoining space through a door. dorset architects

Sustainable Architecture in Dorset

Sustainability is considered from the beginning of every project rather than added after the principal design decisions have been made.

For new buildings, we consider orientation, daylight, shading, ventilation, building fabric and material selection to reduce energy demand and improve comfort. We also assess durability, maintenance and adaptability so that buildings can continue to perform well as their use and the climate change.

For existing buildings, retention and careful improvement can often offer the most responsible solution. Retrofit can reduce waste, preserve local character and avoid much of the carbon associated with demolition and replacement.

We prioritise natural, reclaimed and responsibly sourced materials where appropriate, alongside high-performance fabric and renewable energy systems. The aim is to create buildings that are healthy, efficient and enjoyable to use without relying on unnecessary complexity.

Planning, Heritage and Local Context

Successful planning applications begin with a clear understanding of the site and its surroundings.

We assess relevant planning policy, neighbouring properties, access, landscape, ecology, heritage and local character before developing a proposal. Where a building is listed or lies within a conservation area, we carefully consider its significance and explain how the proposed work responds to the existing fabric and setting.

Our experience helps identify potential constraints early and allows planning, design and technical considerations to be developed together. While no architect can guarantee consent, a well-researched and clearly communicated proposal provides the strongest foundation for a successful application.
