Bransgore Gardens Bungalow

A Contemporary Extension in The New Forest National Park

This contemporary home extension situated in the New Forest National Park features a modern extension and refurbishment of a family home. Focused on creating a light-filled space that bette connects living spaces with the garden.

Sustainability

By extending and improving the existing structure rather than opting for a complete rebuild, the environmental impact was minimised. The use of timber cladding, a renewable resource, further reduced the carbon footprint. Thoughtful insulation and energy-efficient glazing ensure the home remains warm and comfortable, reducing energy consumption.

Context & Place

Situated on the edge of the New Forest, the design draws inspiration from the natural surroundings. The carefully selected materials blend harmoniously with the landscape, while the contemporary extension enhances the character of the original bungalow. The combination of traditional and modern elements creates a home that is both functional and beautiful.

People & Communities

Through this extension and refurbishment, Footprint Architects have given this 1960s bungalow a new lease of life. The design balances modern living with environmental responsibility, providing a comfortable, beautiful space for the homeowners to enjoy for years to come.

“Our goal was to create something both economical and uplifting. By designing the extension as a distinct structure, we clearly defined the relationship between the old and the new.”

- Peter Ward, Architect

A Contemporary New Forest Extension

Footprint Architects have transformed this two-bedroom 1960s bungalow in Bransgore Gardens with a modern and sensitive extension. The project introduced a vaulted living room and study, designed to embrace natural light and provide panoramic views of the tree-lined garden. A family kitchen diner now opens onto a raised terrace, making the most of the beautiful outdoor space.

A Light-Filled Living Space

Positioned at the rear of the property in an underused part of the garden, the new 30 sqm extension serves as a tranquil retreat. The vaulted ceiling, expansive glazing, and minimalist material palette create a sense of openness and calm. Larch timber cladding was chosen for its natural beauty and sustainability, complementing the surrounding landscape.

Enhancing the Existing Home

The former living room was converted into a comfortable bedroom, while a new family kitchen diner was designed for communal gatherings. The connection to the raised terrace enhances indoor-outdoor living, bringing the garden into the heart of the home. The bathroom was also fully modernised, providing a refreshed, functional space.
