Floating House

A contemporary home extension

Located in Branksome, Poole, this carefully designed timber cladded home extension provides a much-needed improvement to the functionality of the existing home.

Sustainability

By minimising ground impact and carefully integrating with the existing landscape, the extension is designed with longevity and environmental sensitivity in mind. The improved layout also enhances energy efficiency within the home, with upgraded thermal performance.

Enhancing Space and Functionality

Footprint Architects specialise in designing elegant extensions that enhance daily living. Our focus was to improve the spatial flow of the existing open-plan layout, introducing a dedicated kitchen and dining space while maintaining a sense of openness and connection between living areas.

The new extension reconfigures the ground floor, creating a natural separation between the kitchen and living space, with the dining area acting as a transition point. This improves both functionality and comfort, providing a more structured and efficient layout that meets the needs of modern family living

A Contemporary Extension Design

The design of the extension aligns with the modern character of Branksome; while ensuring it complements the existing home. Positioned carefully within the rear garden, the extension sits within the axis of the existing structure.

Material choices are influenced by the surrounding context, with a refined palette that respects the property’s existing aesthetic while elevating it with a contemporary feel. The extension is designed to sit lightly within the landscape, using pile foundations to give the structure a floating appearance.

Context & Place

The extension utilises a refined material palette that complements its surroundings. The design respects the site’s natural characteristics, ensuring it remains sympathetic to the landscape.

Sustainable Construction

A key consideration in this project was to ensure minimal environmental impact. The design takes a low-impact approach by using pile foundations to minimise disruption to the natural topography and protect the roots of surrounding trees. The single-storey extension remains below the existing roofline, ensuring privacy for neighbouring properties while maintaining an elegant, unobtrusive presence.

The reconfiguration of internal spaces improves thermal efficiency by optimising natural light and ventilation, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical heating. High-quality materials were selected for durability and performance, contributing to the long-term sustainability of the home.

People & Communities

The reconfigured layout enhances everyday living by providing a more functional, comfortable space while maintaining the openness of the home. The improved connection between the kitchen, dining, and living areas creates a seamless and intuitive flow.
