Edwardian Home Renovation & Extension

A Modern Regeneration of a Classic Home in Richmond, London

Situated in Richmond this three-storey home sits nestled among properties of similar style and character. Our design approach focused on enhancing the quality of the living space, improving the connection to the garden, and upgrading the functionality of the home, all while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding built environment.

Sustainability

The renovation enhances energy efficiency by optimising natural light and ventilation. High-quality materials were selected for durability, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

Context & Place

The design carefully references the surrounding Richmond streetscape, using materials and forms that complement the existing architectural character.

People & Communities

By improving the home’s layout and its connection to outdoor spaces, the renovation creates a more functional and enjoyable living environment for the homeowners, encouraging better use of the garden and communal spaces.

Enhancing Indoor-Outdoor Living

Footprint Architects specialise in designing homes that create seamless transitions between interior and exterior spaces. This Richmond home renovation was carefully designed to open up the living area, bringing in more natural light and improving access to the garden. The extension was designed to create a linear flow between the home and outdoor space, maximising usability while respecting the existing architectural character.

By referencing the building lines of neighbouring properties, the design ensures privacy while allowing for an expanded living area. A fine-tuned material palette was selected to complement the home’s existing structure and maintain harmony with the surrounding properties. This careful balance between old and new ensures that the extension blends seamlessly into its environment while enhancing the home’s functionality.

A Contemporary Home Upgrade

The renovation prioritises improving the home’s usability while preserving its existing charm. The extension provides additional living space without increasing the overall scale of the property, ensuring the design remains sensitive to the context of Richmond’s built environment.

Zinc cladding was chosen to enhance both aesthetics and longevity of the extension and to seamlessly introduce modern elements to the home’s existing structure. The proposal also carefully considers neighbouring views and privacy, ensuring that the extension maintains the home’s place within the streetscape without overlooking adjacent properties.

Connecting Architecture with Nature

A key aspect of the design was to create a stronger connection between the home’s interior and its garden. Large openings were introduced to improve natural lighting and ventilation, making the space feel open and inviting. The landscaping was carefully preserved, ensuring a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors while enhancing accessibility.

By prioritising a minimal material palette, the renovation achieves a contemporary aesthetic that respects the property’s original character while introducing modern elements for improved comfort and functionality.
