Holbrook Primary School is a purpose built KS2 school building focused on healthy learning environments. The new school building has successfully provided an uplifting learning environment, that effectively supports educational activities, school behaviour and wellbeing.
Passive environmental design ensured that classrooms with high ceilings are well ventilated, don’t overheat, and absorb stale air. Optimisation of natural daylighting reduces reliance on artificial lighting which reduces the overall energy consumption.
At Footprint Architects we design primary schools to create inspiring, flexible and sustainable educational environments for the next generation. We recognise that good school design can have a positive impact on educational outcomes for children and young people. Working closely with the teachers, pupils and Wiltshire Council, the new school building Holbrook Primary School responds and enhances the existing school’s provision creating child centred internal and external learning spaces.
Holbrook Primary School in Trowbridge, Wiltshire uses traditional masonry construction with exposed glulam timber beams to create the high-ceiling, naturally lit, and healthy classroom environments. An abundance of natural daylight, with minimal glare, creates an engaging and stimulating learning environment. The use of natural daylighting has reduced the reliance on artificial lighting, improved pupil and teacher wellbeing and reduced energy consumption.
Our Architects engaged the local community and pupils in the design journey with digital models and VR to ensure their aspirations could be integrated into the scheme.
At Holbrook Primary School we ran workshops with school at an early stage to discuss ideas, enabling pupils and staff to feed into the design. Our education architects developed a digital model and used virtual reality headsets to enable pupils, staff and parents to walkthrough and experience their new classrooms before any work started on site. This allowed the architects to gather feedback about how the spaces might be used.
Engaging with pupils, teachers and end users at an early design stage ensures that needs and aspirations can be considered and integrated effectively within the scheme. This allows the children to have a sense of ownership of their new school, prompting positive social interaction and increasing pupil engagement.
By designing openings that connect the interior with the surrounding outdoor context, provides both a sense of place and an uplifting learning experience.
