LUSH Research & Development Centre
Footprint Architects were appointed by cosmetics brand, LUSH, to design the conversion of an existing warehouse space to a multi-use office, research and development center. The project’s aim was to create a workplace environment with a focus on reducing employee stress, creating a communal and collaborative atmosphere, which is a key factor of the LUSH ethos.

Creating Better Spaces for Working
At Footprint Architects we recognise that good office design can have a positive impact on employee wellbeing and productivity. Successful office design can provide an uplifting working environment that can effectively support workplace activities. By adding plants into this workspace, we not only improve air quality and create cleaner air, but plants have the power to reduce stress, fatigue and create a tranquil atmosphere. Using colour was a simple approach to designing a lively, fun and exciting workplace. This industrial fit-out allowed us to make the most of large open communal open spaces, with high ceilings, and an abundance of natural daylighting which helps foster a healthy and more comfortable office environment.
Sustainable Office Refurbishment
We think carefully about the impacts of our projects on the environment. By incorporating sustainable solutions and using recycled and sustainable materials, we can achieve innovative and eco-friendly workplaces. This industrial refurbishment allowed us to incorporate large, glazed elements to maximise natural daylighting. Natural daylighting helps reduce the reliance on artificial lighting, improves employee wellbeing in the workplace, and reduces energy consumption.
Natural ventilation is also key when it comes to boosting workplace productivity. Industrial units are great solutions for office fit-outs as they have the benefit of providing high ceilings and large open spaces. We designed a simple, natural ventilation strategy coupled with high ceilings to absorb stale air. Prioritizing flexibility in the designed spaces allows the unit to be adaptable for future needs, minimizing the need for future construction and build. A sustainable concept that sits well with us and the ethos of LUSH.

Designing Flexible Spaces for a Collaborative Workplace
An important part of the brief for this industrial refurbishment was to ensure the design fosters a stress-free work environment. This is achieved in the open and flexible spaces creating a communal and collaborative atmosphere.We stepped away from dark corridors and cellular offices to an open office environment with large communal spaces. With varying staff needs it was important to design an office that allows multiple working styles. Alongside the co-working spaces, we designed small desk stations and meetings rooms for quieter interactions.
