Located in the historic coastal town of Mudeford, Christchurch, our team were appointed to replace the existing chalet bungalow and provide a new sustainable home designed to passive house standards.
A Passive House designed dwelling to create a sustainable home for the future. Utilising high levels of insulation, careful positioning for solar gains, and high-quality materials, PV Panels for a low energy new-build home.
Our team of architects are experienced in designing homes that incorporate affordable design solutions to create sustainable homes. An affordable approach to passive house design was undertaken by carefully analysing the site to provide an optimal position for the home in relation to the sun path and wind direction throughout the day. South facing windows allow for winter solar gains and solar shading was integrated to reduce overheating during the summer months. Our fabric first approach to sustainable design uses building materials with low embodied carbon including natural timber cladding and grey buff bricks selected for their durability.
Eco-homes that are designed to Passive House Standards create a comfortable, healthy living environment that is future proof. The aim of the project is to improve the quality of the living spaces to create a comfortable environment that encourages better use of the garden, with minimal impact on the surrounding context. The design achieves this by developing a simple built form that creates key living areas that relate to outdoor spaces, provide privacy without encroaching over the neighbours build line.
The fabric first approach focused on, high levels of insulation in the walls, floor and roof, maximising airtightness to reduce cold draughts, positioning windows to maximise heating from the sun in the winter and using thermal mass to keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This approach results in affordable residential design with lower energy bills, an airtight, draught free home and a cleaner healthier living environment.
Carefully designed views create a connection with the surrounding outdoor environment, the natural material palette settles the design into the local coastal environment.
Our team of architects are experienced in designing sustainable modern homes that reflect each site’s unique characteristics and are sensitively designed to fit into their historic locations. Mudeford is a historical coastal town with links to various scenic natural environments. Our concept took immediate inspiration from the historic characteristics of the fishing village, sandspit, harbour and local vernacular. Natural building materials were carefully selected for their sustainable properties and durability. The material palette of rough timber references the beach huts which are found along the sandspit, the harbour stone wall was the inspiration for a grey brick to create a grounded stone element. The natural timber will weather into a silver to create a muted colour tone alongside the grey brick to sensitively blend into the surrounding location.
Improving living spaces, encouraging better use of outdoor living, and designing a home that strengthens the architectural relationship with uplifting historical references to create healthy environments for family homes.
