Newbery Steps Cricket Pavilion
Newbery Steps is a project dedicated to the careful rebuilding and repurposing of the Newbery Steps Cricket Pavilion building in Dean Park, Bournemouth. This historic building, which was in a state of disrepair, has been transformed into a vibrant new space.
Sustainability
A well-insulated thermal envelope, use of matching historic materials, and updated environmental standards will result in a building with low energy usage and increased durability. Successfully re-used old floor boards for external cladding, and sarking boards internally to reduce the amount of virgin materials on site.

Context & Place
The building has been recreated into a beautifully crafted pavilion space respecting the rich heritage and listed site. Newbery steps has created a community space from a derelict building to restore the context to its former glory.

Creating a Sustainable Community Space
The building features a new curved roof design, which has been designed to recreate the original semi-circular timber frame. This design not only honours the original pavilion but also brings modern enhancements to improve its structural and environmental performance. Sitting well with our ethos of re-use, after the careful dismantling we had the unique opportunity to salvage materials such as the original floorboards for external cladding, sarking boards as internal cladding, and original sign posts to reflect the pavilions original purpose.
By preserving the historical essence of the Newbery Steps building with the demands of contemporary sustainability and functionality, the project ensures that the structure will continue to be a valuable and cherished part of the community for generations to come.
Historic Preservation and Modern Sustainability
The Newbery Steps building, dating back to the early 1900s, has undergone a transformation that respects its historic fabric while introducing sustainable design features to meet modern standards. The existing single-storey, barrel-vaulted structure with its timber framework and softwood planking was carefully dismantled and rebuilt. This process included:
- Re-using old floor boards for external cladding
- Re-using sarking boards and tongue and groove cladding internally
- Using materials that match the historic aesthetics.
- Thermally insulating the building to enhance its energy efficiency and longevity.
- Introducing a level access, new foundations, and modern environmental standards to ensure the building’s future viability.
Designing Spaces for Community and Heritage
The projects main aim was to repurpose this derelict historic structure into a vibrant community space, respecting its listed status and rich heritage. The design ensures that the Newbery Steps building will continue to reflect its historical significance while serving a new, meaningful purpose. The focus is on creating a safe, engaging, and functional space for the community.
