Footprint Architects were appointed as Design Guardians for the delivery phase of Parkstone Yacht Club’s new clubhouse redevelopment on the shores of Poole Harbour. This state-of-the-art leisure facility serves as a hub for sailing, social events, and community gatherings, with a design that reflects its unique marina setting overlooking Brownsea Island.
The project was delivered in two phases, beginning with the refurbishment of secondary changing areas to ensure that facilities remained in use during the 2018 sailing season. This phased approach allowed for operational continuity while enabling a smoother transition to the full facility.
The building was delivered with long-term performance in mind, using coastal-grade materials, robust finishes and sustainable construction practices appropriate for the marine setting.
Careful detailing supports thermal performance and daylight access, reducing operational energy demands.
Situated on the shores of Poole Harbour, the clubhouse reflects and enhances its unique coastal context. The form, materials and layout respond to the marina setting, celebrating the views to Brownsea Island while providing protection from prevailing coastal weather.
Glazing, terraces and orientation work in harmony to frame the harbour and maximise natural light. Durable, marine-grade finishes reflect the working waterfront and were chosen to withstand the demands of salt air and seasonal variation. The result is a building that feels both of its place and made to last within it.
The clubhouse is designed to be welcoming and inclusive, supporting a wide range of community activities beyond sailing. The incorporation of youth training spaces, family-friendly facilities and accessible circulation throughout reflects the club’s commitment to nurturing participation at all levels.
The building supports social wellbeing by offering generous gathering spaces, from the glazed lounge to the upper terraces, which invite informal connection and shared experiences. By creating spaces that are adaptable and socially attuned, the clubhouse strengthens its role as a community anchor on the harbourfront.
Working in collaboration with the club, contractor and lead consultant, our team took on a Design Guardian role throughout the construction phase. We provided:
