Salisbury Passive House

An Award Winning Affordable Self-Build, Eco-Friendly Home focusing on Passive House Design Principles

Located within the historic location of Salisbury, Wiltshire, the design focused on embracing the unique river location. Footprint architects were appointed to design this eco-friendly home focusing on affordable passive house principles to create a long lasting sustainable family home for the future.

Sustainability

Affordable residential design that focuses on simple passive house design principles. Utilising high levels of insulation, careful positioning for solar gains, and high quality materials for a low energy self-build home.

Context & Place

The eco-home design reflects the unique river content within Salisbury historic location. Carefully designed expansive views create a connection with the surrounding outdoor environment.

People & Communities

Creating cleaner healthy living environments for long lasting sustainable family homes.

“Simply framed windows in differing rectangular shapes added to the impression of a very contemporary house, whose extension across the whole site seemed to the judges to work very well. The long view down to the garden, to a new added section giving access to the river Nadder, had been taken advantage of very well. A look at the interiors emphasised this benefit of the overall approach. High energy values had clearly been well considered, and the visible workmanship was of high quality. An award was well merited”

Affordable Passive House Design

Our team of architects are experienced in designing homes that incorporate simple techniques to create eco-homes. An affordable approach to passive house design was undertaken by carefully analysing the site to provide an optimal position for the home in relation to the sun path and wind direction throughout the day. South facing windows allow for winter solar gains and solar shading was integrated to reduce overheating during the summer months. Our fabric first approach to sustainable design uses building materials with low embodied carbon including charred timber cladding and buff bricks selected for their durability.

Creating Comfortable Living Environments Through Sustainable Design

Passive house design principles were used to create a comfortable living environment for the clients. This self-build eco home is fitted with high levels of insulation utilising SIPS (Structural Insulated Panel System) and a simple, low energy natural ventilation heat recover system.

The fabric first approach focused on, high levels of insulation in the walls, floor and roof exceeding building regulations, maximising airtightness to reduce cold draughts, positioning windows to maximise heating from the sun in the winter and using thermal mass to keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This approach results in affordable residential design with lower energy bills, an airtight, draught free home and a cleaner healthier living environment.

Designing Sustainable Homes in Historic Settings

At Footprint Architects we design sustainable modern homes that reflect each site’s unique characteristics and carefully pay homage to their historic locations. Salisbury is a historic setting with many links to unique natural environments. The project’s concept took inspiration from the river tributaries of the Salisbury Avon. The River Nadder is a chalk stream which is one of only 200 in the world and located in the garden of the property.

The concept was to reflect the tones of the river palette in the architecture whilst being sensitive to the historic setting. Natural building materials were carefully selected for their sustainable properties, considering low embodied carbon, and selected for their durability to create a contemporary modern home. This eco-friendly home was designed to seamlessly blur the lines between outdoor and indoor living by creating expansive views of the garden and surrounding river.
